Besides nobody could be more demanding and stressful than our very first client, who was still with us but gradually coming down in proportion to 1\/3 of total turnover. We managed to secure contracts with one of the Brussels lobbying agencies, Palace of Science and Culture in Warsaw or Malbork Teutonic Castle where we learned about recluses. However, we learned not only about ladies who had been buried alive in the walls, but important lessons about recruitment and who is, and who isn\u2019t, an ideal candidate to work with us.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The work ethos for MD Online was born that year. Even though our team was growing we realized it is not necessarily coming to a physical \u201coffice\u201d that is important, but rather people who are devoted, highly educated, efficient, and able to work anywhere with Internet access. With a growing team however we needed personal meetings too. It was at this first meeting that we developed the idea of growing our online team with regular annual or semi-annual retreats, for a few days, where we can get to know how we work together, solve the problems and brainstorm new ideas. The first team meeting was in Szymbark- and it was real fun! We had all our core team there; Agata (our first employee) \u2013 responsible for tenders and back office support, Tomek &#8211; responsible for all dealings with our very first major client, and Magda (who had recently joined the team) \u2013 an English linguistic in the process of her PhD.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 662px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i.ibb.co\/H7B2p7H\/wpis-MD.png\" alt=\"Year 4\" width=\"652\" height=\"237\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">First team meeting (from left: Magda- client manager, Agata-special tasks manager, Mark &amp; Dorota, to the front Tomek- currently at eobuwie)<\/p><\/div>\n<h3>Few memories from Magda<\/h3>\n<blockquote><p><em>When <\/em><em>I<\/em> <em>submitted<\/em><em> my CV to MD Online, I <\/em><em>was<\/em><em> in the process of writing my PhD <\/em><em>(generally<\/em> <em>speaking<\/em><em>, it <\/em><em>was<\/em><em> about <\/em><em>the manner of translating<\/em><em> a <\/em><em>book<\/em><em>, a comic boo<\/em><em>k<\/em><em> and a computer game). I <\/em><em>wanted<\/em> <em>to<\/em> <em>become<\/em><em> financially <\/em><em>independent<\/em><em> and in my first year of PhD getting a job <\/em><em>was<\/em><em> the only option.<\/em><em> \ud83d\ude09<\/em><em> My previous bosses didn&#8217;t <\/em><em>recognise<\/em> <em>that<\/em> <em>I<\/em><em> was more <\/em><em>occupied<\/em><em> than <\/em><em>we<\/em><em> agreed at the <\/em><em>beginning,<\/em> <em>which<\/em><em> meant that I <\/em><em>had<\/em> <em>truly little<\/em><em> time <\/em><em>for<\/em> <em>scientific<\/em> <em>activities<\/em><em>. I <\/em><em>started<\/em> <em>thinking<\/em> <em>about<\/em><em> changing jobs and MD Online&#8217;s offer <\/em><em>caught<\/em><em> my eye. After talking to <\/em><em>Dorota,<\/em><em> I <\/em><em>was<\/em><em> extremely interested in the <\/em><em>potential<\/em> <em>job<\/em> <em>\u2013<\/em> <em>I<\/em> <em>could<\/em> <em>develop<\/em><em> further in an <\/em><em>intercultural<\/em><em> and <\/em><em>industry-related<\/em> <em>environment<\/em><em>, and <\/em><em>there were<\/em> <em>no<\/em><em> objections <\/em><em>to<\/em><em> my further <\/em><em>studies<\/em><em>. <\/em><em>I<\/em> <em>heard<\/em> <em>words<\/em><em> of <\/em><em>encouragement<\/em><em> and motivation, which <\/em><em>was<\/em><em> a <\/em><em>positive change<\/em><em>! I <\/em><em>was<\/em><em> also fascinated by the idea of working in a virtual office, <\/em><em>which<\/em> <em>turned<\/em><em> out <\/em><em>to be<\/em><em> perfect for a nerdy introvert. <\/em><em>In the summer, I can go out into the woods with my laptop and work on quotes with my German Shepherd sleeping at my feet. In winter, I work from my home office and its decor obviously shows my literary and gaming preferences.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>At <\/em><em>work<\/em><em>, I <\/em><em>met<\/em> <em>Agata<\/em><em>, <\/em><em>who<\/em> <em>dealt<\/em> <em>with<\/em><em> selected special clients, and Tomek, <\/em><em>who<\/em> <em>worked<\/em><em> in a position <\/em><em>parallel<\/em><em> to mine. When <\/em><em>I<\/em><em> came back from the university, I <\/em><em>changed<\/em> <em>into<\/em> <em>my official work<\/em> <em>tracksuit<\/em><em> and <\/em><em>took over<\/em> <em>project<\/em> <em>management<\/em><em> from Tomek. <\/em><em>I<\/em><em> choose to <\/em><em>believe<\/em> <em>that<\/em><em> I <\/em><em>learnt<\/em> <em>to<\/em><em> do <\/em><em>it<\/em><em> quickly \ud83d\ude00 Back then, <\/em><em>we<\/em><em> had such <\/em><em>a<\/em> <em>number<\/em> <em>of<\/em><em> clients <\/em><em>and<\/em> <em>orders<\/em> <em>that<\/em><em> one person <\/em><em>could<\/em><em> both <\/em><em>deal<\/em> <em>with<\/em><em> the customer and <\/em><em>at<\/em><em> the <\/em><em>same<\/em><em> time process the order itself. In those first months, I <\/em><em>met<\/em><em> many very friendly <\/em><em>translators<\/em><em> from <\/em><em>all over<\/em><em> the <\/em><em>world<\/em><em>, and these <\/em><em>international<\/em> <em>contacts<\/em> <em>continue to<\/em><em> make me happy <\/em><em>to<\/em><em> this <\/em><em>day<\/em><em>. Once, I sent a package to one of our DE <\/em><em>translators<\/em><em> with some German <\/em><em>books<\/em> <em>from the 18th century, she was interested in them and I <\/em><em>was<\/em> <em>not<\/em><em> able to <\/em><em>read<\/em><em> their very <\/em><em>distinctive<\/em> <em>font<\/em><em>. I <\/em><em>added<\/em> <em>some<\/em> <em>albums<\/em><em> in German about my region and it <\/em><em>turned<\/em> <em>out<\/em> <em>that<\/em><em> her grandmother <\/em><em>was<\/em><em> born <\/em><em>a<\/em> <em>few<\/em><em> villages away! From <\/em><em>our<\/em><em> Greek <\/em><em>translator<\/em><em> I <\/em><em>got<\/em><em> some recipes for the <\/em><em>local<\/em> <em>halva<\/em><em> and kebab, <\/em><em>so<\/em><em> I <\/em><em>consider<\/em><em> the <\/em><em>acquaintance<\/em><em> very<\/em><em>&#8230;<\/em> <em>tasty<\/em><em>\ud83d\ude0a<\/em><em> Other type of work would not allow <\/em><em>me to<\/em><em> meet such interesting and <\/em><em>inspiring<\/em><em> people without leaving home. I know <\/em><em>there<\/em> <em>are<\/em> <em>crazy<\/em><em> people <\/em><em>who<\/em><em> like <\/em><em>leaving their homes<\/em><em>, but I <\/em><em>really<\/em><em> like <\/em><em>my<\/em><em> out-of-the-way humble abode.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Over time<\/em><em>,<\/em><em> the company <\/em><em>grew<\/em><em>, customers <\/em><em>trusted us more and more and we had to move<\/em> <em>towards<\/em> <em>fresh solutions<\/em> <em>to<\/em> <em>stay on a steady course<\/em><em> and <\/em><em>keep<\/em> <em>up the good work<\/em><em>. <\/em><em>There was<\/em><em> a lot to <\/em><em>do<\/em><em>, e.g., one of the <\/em><em>clients<\/em> <em>required<\/em><em> an immediate response or the <\/em><em>order<\/em><em> went elsewhere. The pace <\/em><em>could<\/em><em> be frantic, <\/em><em>so<\/em><em> the division <\/em><em>into<\/em><em> scientific and business personnel <\/em><em>was<\/em><em> a natural step. This <\/em><em>gave<\/em> <em>Tomek<\/em><em> and me a <\/em><em>bit<\/em><em> of a breather. Then <\/em><em>another<\/em> <em>Agata<\/em> <em>appeared<\/em><em>, <\/em><em>who<\/em><em> now I think <\/em><em>runs<\/em> <em>her<\/em> <em>own<\/em> <em>business<\/em> <em>as<\/em> <em>a sworn<\/em> <em>translator,<\/em> <em>so<\/em> <em>we<\/em><em> could <\/em><em>regain our strength<\/em><em>. There <\/em><em>was<\/em><em> time to calmly familiarize <\/em><em>ourselves<\/em><em> with CAT <\/em><em>tools<\/em><em> and <\/em><em>customer<\/em> <em>management<\/em><em> systems. <\/em><em>But<\/em><em> it did not <\/em><em>last<\/em> <em>long<\/em><em>, the projects <\/em><em>began<\/em><em> to <\/em><em>flow<\/em> <em>in<\/em><em> a wider stream and we <\/em><em>had<\/em><em> to <\/em><em>specialise<\/em><em> even more. <\/em><em>Since<\/em><em> I <\/em><em>took<\/em><em> over the front office, i.e., day-to- <\/em><em>day<\/em><em> contact with the client, I no <\/em><em>longer deal with<\/em> <em>the<\/em> <em>assignment<\/em> <em>of<\/em> <em>translations<\/em><em>. I sometimes miss the <\/em><em>funny<\/em><em> situations with <\/em><em>translators<\/em><em>, but clients <\/em><em>can<\/em> <em>be<\/em><em> very funny, <\/em><em>too<\/em><em>! <\/em><em>One<\/em><em> of the PMs of the partner company gets in touch from time <\/em><em>to<\/em><em> time to <\/em><em>exchange<\/em> <em>observations<\/em><em> regarding the <\/em><em>Witcher<\/em><em>, Tolkien and other fantasy <\/em><em>universes<\/em><em>. Yet another <\/em><em>PM<\/em> <em>often<\/em><em> replies to my questions with images, e.g., <\/em><em>she sends<\/em><em> a gif of <\/em><em>a<\/em> <em>traffic<\/em> <em>light<\/em><em> when I ask if we have <\/em><em>a<\/em> <em>&#8220;<\/em><em>green<\/em> <em>light<\/em><em>&#8220;<\/em><em> for this project.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>At the end of that year it became obvious that we need to separate the scientific proofreading arm of our business from translations. The two businesses were too different in nature- the translation side of the business dealt with large volumes or multi-language translations, usually with a fast turnaround times and science which was exclusively in English and carried out by PhD experts, where extreme attention to detail and quality was important above turnaround times.
